Cyberpunk 2077 tells the tale of how advancement went hand-in-hand with the decay of society.
Body augmentations “invented to serve society” multiplied the problems, and which as you can see in the trailer, has led to “mayhem in the streets.” New inventions also led to addictions, and the larger problem of poverty.
In the game, layers will walk the streets of Night City as an individual, who raised on the streets, is trying to better himself while trying to survive a world full of boostergangs and megacorporations.
The city is rampant with drugs, violence, poverty and exclusion where “psychos go on rampages.” The streets are also filled with junkies addicted to “the braindance,” which is an inexpensive way to experience the emotions and stimuli of someone who lives a more exciting life.
A user can “stream a braindance directly into his neural system via special brain augmentations,” by using a BD player. This allows the viewer to “experience all brain processes registered, including emotions, muscle movements and all stimuli perceived by the recording person.”
Some braindances created by megacorporations are simple, some viscerally extreme, and others more controversial due to being created illegally in the underground.
So for example: entering the mind of a serial killer means not only “seeing the monstrosity he performs, but also living his lust to kill and fulfillment.”
There are accounts of users also pushing things too far with braindances, to the point they cannot stop living the other persons life.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a multi-thread, nonlinear story in which players will visit some of the places pulled from the pen and paper Cyberpunk 2020 RPG.
One area will include a combat zone completely taken over by gangs, where the player can visit the Afterlife joint and the Forlorn Hope.
The sandbox nature of the game will also provide the player with plenty of guns, rifles, implants, gadgets and other equipment.

Cyberpunk 2077 Will Run On A Shiny New Engine, Just In Time For The Next Generation


Less than a day after Sony teases a reveal of the PS4, CD Projekt Red—makers of the popular Witcher series—have unveiled the engine that will be powering their next-generation games. The timing of the announcement is probably a coincidence, but maybe not!

Called RedEngine 3, the tech will be powering the company's upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. It will likely also be the engine for the project the dev studio has promised to spill the beans about on Feb. 5, which many expect to be the next Witcher game. Here's the official word about the new tech from CD Projekt Red:


"The REDengine 3 tech is tailor-made to create non-linear and story-driven RPGs with a system that allows to stream and handle fully explorable open-worlds. Cyberpunk 2077, the second project the studio is working on, will have prime examples demonstrating that REDengine 3 is the perfect tool for creating immense universes filled with exciting, nonlinear adventures. The advanced technology of the REDengine 3 makes RPGs comparable to top-shelf shooters, both in terms of game-world presentation and the epic proportions of events that the player is drawn into. The engine is a next-gen-ready solution that begins to blur the line between pre-rendered CGI movies and real time rendered graphics, bringing us closer to the most life-like world ever created in video games. All the state-of-the-art visuals form a living ecosystem allowing the player to be a part of a vivid environment. The new face and body-animation systems implemented in REDengine 3 offer realistic expression of emotions, movie-quality scenes and character interactions.

The technology uses high-dynamic-range rendering with 64-bit precision that ensures superior picture quality with more realistic and precise lighting without losses derived from reduced contrast ratio. Cyberpunk 2077, the next game from The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, is the biggest title the studio has ever made.

The sci-fi-flavoured RPG was originally announced back in 2012, but the Polish outlet has remained quiet on specificities of the project since.

Now it has been revealed that the title will be ever grander in scale than the third and final entry in the developers sprawling fantasy series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

“Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before,” visual effects artist Jose Teixeira told MCV. “Far, far bigger.

“We're really stepping into the unknown in terms of complexity and size and problems we encounter.”

The Witcher 3 became the fastest-selling game in the UK during 2015 upon its release back in May, but was overtaken by the launch of fellow open-world title Batman Arkham Knight one month later.

Teixeira continued by saying that The Witcher 3s scope had helped the studio to refine its open-world formula for Cyberpunk 2077.

"The Witcher helped Cyberpunk quite a bit, because the game got so big and so complex that it really taught us,” he explained. “We really didn't know what was going to happen.

“If anything, working on The Witcher 3 was a really good and often brutal learning experience. Cyberpunk is going to benefit greatly from it. I can almost guarantee it.

"I have a lot of things that I want to change and do better the next time around, and I can guarantee that almost everyone in that studio has something that they go 'I did this this time, next time I can do it differently, I can do it better'.”

Unsurprisingly, Teixeira refused to give any clues regarding a potential release window for the title.

“The name of the game is Cyberpunk 2077, and we usually say the release date is 2077,” he joked.

CD Projekt Red wants to publish Cyberpunk 2077 at the end of 2016. This has been verified by a reliable source close to the Polish developer and Gamereactor Germany.

Officially there is still only talk regarding a PC release, but - and this is pure speculation on our part - it's likely that the game will be coming out on both PS4 and Xbox One.

The Witcher studio has been working on the sci-fi RPG based on the pen & paper universe of Mike Pondsmith since mid-2012, and with work on Wild Hunt coming to a close soon, expect development to pick up pace in the months ahead.

We reached out for CD Projekt for an official comment, but have yet to receive one.

Life after The Witcher exists. We've been working on Cyberpunk 2077 for a long time. It's a completely different reality, set in the future, with corporations and morally grey world. Just to be clear: We already have the release date for Cyberpunk 2077 planned, but we won't announce it until we are ready to start the marketing campaign. At the moment we're concentrating on The Witcher and don't want to distract users from that product, which we are still monetising.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of those titles that gamers are going crazy for , even though a lot hasnt happened with the game yet. Developer CD Projekt RED, best known for it's work with The Witcher franchise , is gearing up to begin serious production . According to one team member who spoke with iDigitalTimes at PAX East 2016, enthusiasm for the project is making it easy to say goodbye to The Witcher franchise and it's hero, Geralt, who will see his final adventure in the release of the upcoming Blood And Wine DLC.

“To be honest, the politically correct answer is yes, it is sad [to finish Geralts story]. But the truth is that everyone is so insanely pumped about working on the next project, Cyberpunk 2077 ,” said Jose Teixeira, a visual effects artist for CD Projekt RED. “We couldve made a million expansions for The Witcher because theres so many stories in that world but everyone is crazy excited about Cyberpunk 2077. ”

Cyberpunk 2077 is very, very early in it's development cycle and CD Projekt RED hasnt said much about what fans can expect. Although the little bits of info they have shared have been met with a huge response that Teixeira says is unlike the trajectory of The Witcher franchise.

“There is a difference between how games like this reach a general audience. With The Witcher it was a snowball effect and there was this core of hardcore gamers that knew about The Witcher and they passed the word along. It was a very slow process,” he said. “With Cyberpunk 2077 all they did was this little mood trailer and it just went insane. It was like an avalanche of interest immediately. It clicks with people instantly and it does the exact same thing with me.”
In order to deliver on the already high expectations for the game, CD Projekt RED is first going to improve the software used in-house to make the game. Teixeira explained that developing The Witcher 3 was such a long and involved process that the team kept notes along the way of the tools they want to make things easier.

“The most important thing thats happening at the moment is that the programmers are taking the feedback we gave them from working on The Witcher . As cliche as it sounds it was a big learning experience,” he said, explaining that by the end of the development everyone had a list of features they wanted for new dev tools. “The programmers are updating our software quite drastically.”
This includes a brand new visual effects editor, which Teixeira is very excited about. He admits that hes got a little more enthusiasm for the upcoming project than he did for The Witcher 3 . For him, Cyberpunk 2077 represents a chance to explore a genre he finds more interesting.

“I immensely appreciate medieval fantasy games,” he said. “ But I dont know what it is about Cyberpunk 2077 but it just clicks. Theres something about this game that just clicks with me and Im really happy to be working on it.”

και λιγα λες, ειχαν παρουσιασει το witcher 3 το 13 και βγηκε το 15, ενω τωρα στην ουσια δεν εχουν δειξει τιποτα εκτος απο ενα CGI trailer που απλα δειχνει ενα mood του παιχνιδιου και τιποτε αλλο.

Λογικά τώρα θα έχουν την τεχνολογία και την εμπειρία απο ένα μεγάλο παιχνιδι όποτε ίσως αυτό κάπως κάνει πιο μικρό το στάδιο της παραγωγής.

Ελπίζω το σενάριο να το δουλεύουν εδω και καιρό.

Report: Cyberpunk 2077 to Have a Gameplay Demo at E3


GRY Online, a Polish gaming site, claims two sources have revealed to them that CD Projekt REDs Cyberpunk 2077 will have a gameplay demo at E3 2018. The report doesnt come as too much of a surprise after the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter sprang back to life last week with a mysterious tweet and was suddenly a verified account.

The reports indicate that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a trailer at either Sony or Microsofts press conference, with a behind-closed-doors gameplay demonstration to happen for press during the show. If these closed door sessions are like most at E3, the writers wont be getting hands-on Cyberpunk 2077 themselves. Instead a developer will be walking them through some gameplay scenarios, with those same commentated scenarios to release online sometime after E3.

A YouTuber by the name of LegacyKillaHD also alleges that Sony received a tech demo from of Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt RED last year, claiming that the evidence his source has provided him leads him to believe this is the truth. It remains to be seen if this means that CD Projekt RED will be working with Sony for the reveal, but past games (The Witcher 3, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game) have been showcased on the Microsoft stage, so switching to Sonys press conference for the big Cyberpunk 2077 reveal would be quite a surprising move.

What else is unclear is if E3 2018 will be the first big showing for Cyberpunk 2077, or if there will be teases and reveals leading up to Junes massive industry showcase. Its likely we wont have to wait another six months to hear from CD Projekt RED, but the scope of those reveals is currently unknown.

Weve barely had any news on CD Projekt REDs upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 ever since it was first announced years ago, but weve had a lot more of its in the last few weeks. What were reporting on today might be a big one though. CD Projekt Reds Piotr Nielubowicz and Adam Kiciński recently spoke at the Pareto Securities Gaming Seminar 2018 event, and they spent quite a lot of time speaking about the upcoming RPG.

While speaking about what Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be like, they showed off a few slides to give snippets of information on the game. One of the slides, which you can see above, mentioned that the game is going to be built on “current and next generation technology”- the implication, of course, being that Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be a cross-generation game that not only launches on the Xbox One and PS4, but on the next Xbox and PS5 as well.

Of course, theres also the possibility that the statement means nothing. However, it should be kept in mind that Cyberpunk 2077 probably isnt going to be out for at least a couple more years yet, and by the time it launches, the PS4 and the Xbox One will be late into their life cycles, while their successors will probably also be right around the corner. It wouldnt be completely illogical to assume that CD Projekt RED might want to release the game on next generation systems as well.

Cyberpunk 2077 is “Very Advanced” Technology-Wise; Character Creation, Classes, and More Confirmed


During CD Projekts fiscal year 2017 financial presentation, President Adam Kiciński mentioned that hed “terribly” like to say something about Cyberpunk 2077, but today is not the time.

When asked when well know more, Kiciński commented that he cant just announce the announcement. Pressed further on what will be showcased at E3, he mentioned that it will be announced “just before” the show.

Ultimately, Kiciński did end up talking a bit about Cyberpunk 2077.

An analysis firm recently suggested that the game could be a cross-generation project involving the next round of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Asked to comment on this, Kiciński explained that the next generation has not been announced yet, so he can only speculate. Technologically-wise Cyberpunk 2077 is “very advanced.” The studios tech is “ready to interface with future generations.” The game is developed in such a way that it can take advantage “of future, very powerful” hardware.

Kiciński confirmed that itll be possible to create your character and choose among various classes. This pretty much denies a wild rumor that was spread on youtube a few months ago, alleging that the studio had moved to a different design with no classes.

Asked whether there will be multiplayer, he confirmed that first of all, the studio is going to deliver a huge story-drive single-player role-playing game as it was the case for The Witcher 3.

As for the possibility of adding multiplayer in expansions, he mentioned that he does not like to comment on that, but he wont say that its not going to happen, as the developer already mentioned in the past that they want future projects to include online components at some point.

Asked whether the developer is considering the Battle Royale genre for Cyberpunk 2077, Kiciński explained that at the moment theyre considering everything and anything but as of today theyre not discussing the game yet. The first thing theyre actually going to discuss is the immense story-driven role-playing single player experience without any microtransactions whatsoever, or any hidden payments, just as it was the case for The Witcher 3, even if its going to be a very different game, with no predefined character, a futuristic world, and 3D movement.

We also heard that the inclusion of Geralt of Rivia in SoulCalibur VI has no “financial incentive” for the studio, but its a promotional effort.

Asked whether the studio is considering the Nintendo Switch as a platform, Kiciński responded that when talking about CD Projekts larger games theyre focusing on the strongest platforms like high-specs PCs and consoles. As for other games, theyre not planning any release on the Switch for now, but theyll see what the future brings.

It's been over 2077 days since we announced our plan to develop Cyberpunk 2077. We released a CGI trailer, gave some interviews and... went dark. Normal procedure for these kinds of things - you announce a game and then shut up, roll up your sleeves, and go to work. We wanted to give you The Witcher 3 and both expansions first, which is why this period of staying silent was longer than we planned. Sorry for that.

As soon as we concluded work on Blood and Wine we were able to go full speed ahead with CP2077's pre-production. But we chose to remain silent. Why? At some point, we made a decision to resume talking about the game only when we have something to show. Something meaningful and substantial. This is because we do realise you've been (im)patiently waiting for a very long time, and we wouldn't want anyone to feel that we're taking this for granted. CD Projekt has finally pulled back the curtain on Cyberpunk 2077, revealing the game to press behind closed doors at E3 this week.

I saw a 50 minute live uncut gameplay demo and was blown away by the level of detail in Night City, the open world in which the game takes place. During the demo, a number of eye-catching features of the game were revealed. Here's everything I discovered during our Cyberpunk 2077 behind closed doors demo:

Cyberpunk is a first-person role-playing game. You play the game from a first-person perspective, shooting weapons in the traditional FPS style, with dialogue choices appearing on screen.

You play V, an urban mercenary who takes on dangerous jobs for money. You are a cyberpunk, CD Projekt said.

Unlike in The Witcher 3, CD Projekt's previous game in which you play as Geralt, in Cyberpunk 2077 you create your character, or your version of V. You can choose to play as a male or female, and choose your "life path", which, alongside your gender, affects your experience within the world. You can customise everything from your haircut to your tattoos. You can also put points into various attributes, such as strength, constitution, intelligence and reflexes.

There's no character class to pick, however. Cyberpunk 2077 has a fluid class system which lets you customise your own class throughout the gameplay experience. You can become a Solo, Techie or a Netrunner - or a mix of all of them.

Our demo takes place near the beginning of the game. V alongside a friend called Jackie Welles and a netrunner called T-Bug is trying to find a missing person. It turns out Scavengers, one of the various factions in the game, are kidnapping people to harvest implants.

The first-person shooting includes a slow motion "bullet time" effect and a slide move. You can combine the two for dramatic effect.

Damage numbers pop out of enemies as you shoot them (the enemies have life bars).

You can take a reflex booster such as the Kereznikov to enhance your reactions. Drug taking is a part of the game, done via asthma pump-like devices.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a mature game intended for a mature audience, CD Projekt said, and as as a result features full frontal nudity.

Eventually, V finds her missing person: the naked body of a woman in an ice bath. She picks her up in a bid to help her.

Trauma Team is a group described as "high-end medical insurance for rich people". We see a few of its members arrive via flying car to pick up the missing person's body.

Cyberpunk isn't afraid to swear - there were a couple of c-bombs in our demo and plenty of f-words.

You have an apartment and can have one-night stands with people. (We see V wake up from one of these just as her fleeting partner walks out of her apartment.)

You have a variety of quests to choose from (these are listed on-screen).

In her apartment, V takes her pistol and her jacket. The jacket plays an important role in the game. Not only does it look cool, but it also gives you stats, including "street cred". Street cred is an experience you gain from doing open world bits and bobs, and helps you unlock content throughout the city.

V's apartment is located in a mega building, a huge building complex that forms a micro-society of its own. Cyberpunk 2077 is an alternate timeline which has seen the development of the euro-dollar as standard currency, which people call eddies.

The city has been designed to be interactive. You can interact with an advert and it will tell you where to buy the product. In our demo, V was pointed to a can of soda, which she bought from a vending machine.

In the year 2077 print media is still going strong - we see newspapers.

Wilson is a local gunsmith. You can use his services to buy and upgrade weapons.

CD Projekt said there are no loading screens in Cyberpunk 2077's open world. The city is divided up into six unique districts. Our demo took place in Watson.

Night City is packed with people (one section showed scores of computer-controlled people crossing a street. Quests and points of interest are everywhere, and the people who fill the city offer plenty of ambient dialogue. In one street I noticed a crime scene, with holographic recreations of the crime visible behind police lines. Neon is everywhere. And yes, there's a noodle bar.

V is offered a job she views as her ticket to the mercenary bigtime. She's asked to retrieve some gear from a local gang. You then have a choice: you can choose to steal the gear from the gang, or call a Militech agent called Meredith Stout who the Scavengers stole the gear from in the first place to arrange a meeting to perhaps play the various factions off of each other.

The city includes "ripper doctors", specialist vendors who let you implant and upgrade your cyberware for money. V visits a ripper doc she knows called Doctor Victor. (Some ripper docs operate legally, others on the black market and offer illegal implants.) You sit in a chair and browse his wares, and decide to buy an optical scanner and a sub-dermal weapon grip. You pull your eyeball out, place your arm down in a vice and take an anaesthetic before waiting for the ripper doc to carve you up.

The optical scanner lets you take a closer look at things by zooming in. You can also analyse objects to find out their threat level and gang affiliation, among other things. The weapon grip, which is grafted into the palm of V's hand, lets you see your ammo count, alternate fire modes and adds damage to gun shots.

Lots of people like boxing in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. It's on a lot of screens.

You can drive vehicles in the city. In our demo, V drives a sports car. There's also vehicle combat in the sense that you can lean out of your vehicle and shoot your weapon. (V and Jackie are ambushed at one point by Scavengers and you find yourself in a car chase.) You can drive vehicles in first and third person.

The dialogue system lets you approach encounters in a variety of ways. (V doesn't recite the line of dialogue you pick, by the way. Cyberpunk uses a system similar to Mass Effect, with V delivering her take on the line you pick.) The meeting with Meredith Stout does not begin well - she has one of her goons hack you and submit you to a lie detector test. You can choose to pull out your gun or fight back. In our demo, V keeps talking, eventually convincing Stout to take up her offer of funding her purchase of the stolen gear from the gang. Desperate to uncover her mole, Stout gives V a cred chip with 50k on it. By meeting with Stout, you open up a non-violent approach to the meeting with the gang. But, as CD Projekt pointed out, you can decide to steal it, anyway.

This stolen gear turns out to be a bot. It's held by Maelstrom, a group obsessed with body modification and on their way to becoming machines themselves. They're using the Militech gear they stole to fortify their hideout.

Once you buy the bot, all hell breaks loose. The cred chip had some kind of virus on it, and it kills some of the Maelstrom members. You then fight to escape the lair.

Cyberpunk 2077 has an inspection system that lets you learn about objects and lore and other useful info. You use it to link with the bot. The bot, by the way, looks like it's your companion throughout the game.

The tech shotgun contains bullets that penetrate cover and even other enemies. In its alternate fire mode, you can charge it up to fire against enemies.

There are various skills in the game that can be used to your advantage. One is engineering. With a high enough engineering skill, you can disassemble panels to open up new paths.

Cyberpunk 2077 has a cool ricochet targeting system that lets you bounce bullets off of walls. You can see the path the bullets will take, Peggle style, when aiming against walls.

You can see enemies who hide behind cover once you've scanned them. One useful combo is using the scanner to spot enemies, then blasting through the cover with the tech shotgun.

You can blow people's legs off and shoot glass out.

The smart rifle has bullets that track and follow your target.

You can customise weapons with mods.

You can hack enemies and add malicious software to their squadmates. After you've done this, you can deploy a virus to jam the connection between one of these squadmates and their weapon, preventing them from shooting.

The twin blades we saw in Cyberpunk 2077's announcement trailer are present and correct. You can use them to slice and dice enemies.

V is a pretty agile character. She can mantle and wallrun. You can use the twin blades mid-wallrun to create a ledge from which you can jump down on enemies, a bit like a cyber ninja.

V escapes the gang lair, defeating the Maelstrom boss at the end of the quest. The job done, your street cred is increased. CD Projekt said this was just one way the quest could have gone. You could have even teamed up with the Maelstrom boss for another twist.

The demo ends with V and Jackie driving away from the scene of the crime. V is buoyant - she's finally hit the big-time and she has big plans for her future in Night City.

After our Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo, I interviewed CD Projekt quest designer Patrick Mills to find out more about the studio's new game.

Relative to the world of The Witcher 3, how does Night City compare size wise?

Patrick Mills: In terms of specific size, it's really difficult to tell because Witcher 3 was flat, and our game is very vertical. You've got a footprint in Witcher 3 and that's it. But our game just goes up and up and up and up. So we can put a lot of stuff in there. It's going to be really dense.

We've got six districts. You just saw a little bit of Watson, which is a fallen corporate giant. Each district will feel distinct. There will be a lot to see and a lot to do. It's very big. It's very big.

But you're not putting a size on it?

Patrick Mills: We can't put a number on it yet. We're still building it. It's difficult to say exactly how big it's going to be and we don't want to put any numbers on it. But it's going to be huge.

You can drive a car...

Patrick Mills: Yes. You can drive a car. You can drive a motorcycle and of course you can get around on foot. That's what we're willing to talk about right now.

Can you run over pedestrians? How much chaos can you cause?

Patrick Mills: You can cause a decent amount of chaos. We're not ready to talk about exactly how those systems are going to work, but you can cause chaos. You can run over pedestrians. However, it's not the game of that. It's the game of being a mercenary. We'll have more to share later in that respect.

Witcher 3, we did have Roach. You could ride around on Roach and get from place to place. And he was cool, but he wasn't as integrated into the world as we want the cars and the motorcycles to be. You saw in the demo, we've got that bit where there's a combat sequence. That stuff was possible in Witcher 3, but we didn't rely on it very much. It's going to be a much bigger focus in this game to have this sort of vehicular combat going on. You asked about chaos - the chaos you saw when the Scavengers show up while you're driving, that's what we're looking for.

There are a huge number of dialogue choices in the game, but to what extent can you affect the overarching story?

Patrick Mills: It's not a linear story. We want to do the same thing we did with Witcher 3, which is have really involved choice and consequence. In terms of the demo you saw, there are several different ways to approach that encounter with Maelstrom to buy the bot. You can go in there guns blazing. You can go and talk to them. There are a few other things we want to save - we don't want to talk about them, but they will be in the game.

We also want to have those choice and consequences that I think were greatest in Witcher, which were the ones where you make the decision not knowing what the outcome was going to be, and you have to go with your gut and figure out exactly what you want, and then later you see the consequences. We want a lot of that here. And you will be able to affect the main story pretty significantly.

It's called Night City, but we've only seen it in day time. Why show it in that light?

Patrick Mills: The dark city streets, the rain slicked streets, those are great. And those are in our game. We absolutely do have those. There is a day/night cycle. There's a weather system. All of that.

Thematically, one of the things about this sort of look, this sort of sun-bleached cyberpunk look is the crimes of this world, the worst things that happen, they happen in broad daylight. They happen and everybody knows they happen. You don't need the cover of darkness to get away with the things people get away with in this world.

Does it have any of the Bladerunner-established cyberpunk tropes, such as eating noodles at night in the rain?

Patrick Mills: That is there for sure. You will see those things, but it's not the only thing you see. We want to have a little bit more variety. We want to have depth and broaden that out. If you look at our trailer from 2012 and you look at the trailer now, both of those, they're in the same world. Those are both in the same world. Even though they are different art styles, we've gone from that art style and we've branched out from there. So we've got a lot more variety. We want it to feel like a real city, an international city and a city that's alive. If it's dark all the time, I don't know if I'd believe that.

Would you agree with the suggestion that the game has an 80s vibe to it?

Patrick Mills: There is an 80s influence, for sure. But we don't limit ourselves to just the 80s. You've also got influences from other eras, and of course from other types of sci-fi and cyberpunk. We've got lots of influences in there. We really want this city and the people in it to be vibrant and alive. What you're gonna see in the game is a mix of all sorts of art styles to create almost a wall of culture. It's like a wall of noise to just blast at you and make you feel like you're in this alive, vibrant place. It's also an international place, as I mentioned before. You have a lot of different influences from different cultures all around the world.

When the camera pulled back to show the car in third person, I thought of Grand Theft Auto. Is that a fair comparison for you?

Patrick Mills: It is a comparison that is, on the surface level, really looks like it. GTA 5 took place in California and our game takes place in California as well. You see it and there are similarities. But it's not the same kind of game. We are an RPG. We're a non-linear RPG with a character you control and you create. In terms of how we build quests, that's distinctly us, and you're going to get that. We would really want you to look more at Witcher 3 in terms of what you're going to get from this.

Will you get phone calls from people offering you quests?

Patrick Mills: You can expect a variety of things. In the Cyberpunk world there are these people called Fixers. The thing about Fixers is they're the brokers of the mercenary life. They're the ones who arrange for mercenaries to be brought in to solve problems. You're going to get some of those jobs from talking to Fixers.

Sometimes you'll see things on the street that you want to get involved in. We've got a variety of different ways to draw you into quests. We don't want it to just be, drive to this location or just call this guy and get a quest. We want it to feel alive and immerse you in the world.

The demo showed off an incredible amount of detail in an urban-focused part of the city. Do other areas have a different vibe, perhaps areas that are more out in the open?

Patrick Mills: We have a variety of districts. The one you saw was Watson. But we also have a slums area. We have an area with rich mansions. The districts should all feel distinct. Some of them may feel a little bit more sedate. They aren't. It's just hiding. Those places are just as dangerous as everywhere else in Night City, but for different reasons.

We want Night City to feel like one of the characters in the game, and it has different faces it puts on. But that city is always out hunting for you. That scene in the demo where she leaves the mega building - one of the things I like about that scene is you walk out of that and it's almost like you're walking into a mouth. It's like you're walking into the mouth of the city and it just closes in around you and you find yourself drowning in it. You'll get different experiences in different districts.

Does it have that Witcher thing of, if you can see it you can go to it?

Patrick Mills: Yeah. Obviously every game has an end, but yes. I don't want to mislead you into thinking you can go into every building. We want to concentrate on that hand-crafted detail. We're not using proceedural generation. But we want to make sure that if you see some place interesting, you can go there and experience it. We don't intend to put up any kind of artificial barriers to prevent you from moving around the city. It's very much like The Witcher.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 a purely single-player game?

Patrick Mills: Yes, it is.

So there's no multiplayer whatsoever?

Patrick Mills: We have multiplayer in R&D, but the game we're shipping to you, the game you're going to buy is the single-player experience. That's really what we're concentrating on now, the single-player RPG experience. That's what we want to nail down before we start looking at any of these other things.

So when you say you've got multiplayer in R&D, do you mean in relation to Cyberpunk 2077, or just generally at the studio?

Patrick Mills: In relation to Cyberpunk as well as just generally at the studio.

So maybe multiplayer will come post-launch?

Patrick Mills: Maybe, no promises. Nothing at launch. At launch we're concentrating on the single-player game. That's what we want to give you.

Your partner in crime, Jackie, is an impressive AI partner who at one point picks up a car and uses it as a shield. Is he your constant companion throughout the game?

Patrick Mills: For most of this game - I don't know exactly what the ratios are going to be - you are a solo player. You're a single mercenary who goes and does mercenary jobs. You will be joined on many of those jobs with other people, but it's not a game where you have like a party or anything like that.

So he's not your constant partner?

Patrick Mills: He's not your constant partner. Of course, he's there for certain story parts, like you saw in Maelstrom. We'll have many sequences like that, but we are concentrating on the solo experience.

We saw V's apartment. Is that your home base you can return to?

Patrick Mills: That is your home base at the beginning of the game. Across the course of the game you will be able to purchase additional locations you can use as your home base. It's too early to talk about too many details about that system, but we do plan on having that.

We got a glimpse at what you're able to do in your apartment.

Patrick Mills: You can suit up, check your computer. In the demo the quest log up in the corner says, get your gun, get your katana, check your email.

It looks like a place for you to take people back for some fun.

Patrick Mills: Certainly. Certainly that. There are definitely romantic encounters in the game, both long-lasting romantic situations and also one-night stands, as you saw in the demo.

You can play as a man or a woman. Does the game play significantly differently depending on whether your V is a man or a woman? Is the story significantly different? Are the romances different?

Patrick Mills: Certainly the romances will be different. While many of the characters you can romance in our game are bisexual, not all of them are. They have preferences as well. We want them to feel like living people with histories.

In terms of how the story changes, we don't want to reveal too many story details, but there will be differences.

V looks pretty agile, with a mantle and a wallrun. How far do her movement powers go?

Patrick Mills: We're not doing anything superhero level, but the cyberware will give you superhuman abilities. You saw a few of those. There will be a lot more. What you saw in the demo was a fast solo style gameplay. In this universe, a combat character is known as a solo. We have a couple of different varieties of how to do that particular thing. What you were seeing there was a bit of that very agile combat, but we also have the strong solo who can knuckle down. Jackie, for example, would be considered a strong solo.

Can you pick a class, eventually?

Patrick Mills: It's a fluid class system. In the original 2020 there were many classes. We went into the 2020 book and we pulled out three we thought would fit really well with our game. But, unlike with the original 2020 where you're locked into one of those things and then could pick and choose a bit, in ours we want you to be able to pick and choose very fluidly and freely to play the way you want to play.

They're the ones who plug into the network. There was a bit of Netrunner gameplay in the demo where she grabbed the Maelstrom guy and jacked into his head. Those three.

You appear to be able to talk your way through a lot of tense situations. There are engineering and hacking skill checks. Is speech also a skill check?

Patrick Mills: We don't want to gate speech behind particular classes or anything like that. We want that to be about the story and about your choices in the story.

CD Projekt describes the game as a "first-person RPG."
Gameplay is in first a first-person perspective, but switched to third-person during a cutscene.
You play a character named V (as in the letter).
V can be a man or a woman.
The stats you pick at the start include Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Reflexes, Tech, and Cool.
These stats are all pulled from the original tabletop RPG.
There are no classes at the start. Instead, you evolve the class you want to be as you play instead of picking a role.
Your apartment is a set place that fills with all of the clothes and weapons you get, though you don't have to go there to swap.
You'll be able to get more and different apartments throughout the game.
You can drive cars in the game, and seemingly toggle between first and third person during this.
While driving in first-person, the U.I. appears diegetically on the windshield.
You can engage in combat while driving -- AI took over steering as you lean out the window and shoot at enemies.
CD Projekt also described Cyberpunk as a "mature experience intended for mature audiences."
The goal is for you to not only engage with the game world, but with its inhabitants.
Like Witcher, you take missions from NPCs and have dialogue options in conversations.
It's an open world that you open up more with "street cred." For example, a specific jacket might raise it by 5%, allowing you access to new places.
Completing a quest levels up your street cred.
The UI in the demo is extremely minimal at -- just a light compass and a small quest log.
UI expands during combat -- enemies have names, health bars, and what appear to be levels.
Some enemies have question marks instead of levels, possibly meaning they're much higher level than you.
Damage numbers pop up during combat.
There's a bullet-time-like ability that allows you to slow down time.
CD Projekt keeps emphasizing that choices have consequences, in the moment and to the world at large.
Obstacles have several solutions depending on your skills. For example, V got to a door, but his hacking skill was too low. However, his engineering skill was high enough, so he could open a panel and bypass the door.
There's an inspection system lets you look super close at items and learn more about lore.
You use an inhaler to heal.
Gunplay feels slower than Doom or Borderlands, but faster than Fallout 4.
CD Projekt showed off some late-game abilities, including mantis-like blade arms and wall running.
We saw a boss fight against a dude in an exoskeleton. This included sliding under cars and taking cover.

Why to show CP77 behind closed doors?


Would love show everyone, E3 format influenced decisions. Only so limited amount of people would have seen it on stage. They decided to show to limited pool of people too, get feedback straight.
They handed out surveys to everyone who saw gameplay demo.


How long was in prep for E3?


They started prep in 2017.


They appriciate that people are willing to wait bit longer for CP77, telling them to take their time and get it right

They do QA from early on in development, seeking for any issues and solutions early on.

Teased in 2013, rumors about reboots later. True?


Coy about answer, but confirms that there has been some soft-reboots on aspects of the game. Iterating. Visual design was one of those things, if I understood context right
They somewhat changed direction of whole game too at some point. Doesn't address it, but sounds like there was no rumored 100% clean start hard-reboot.


When true dev started?


They thought in 2013 they could run CP77 and TW3 in parallel, they couldn't. They maybe could have, but decided to go all in on TW3's and expansions quality.
There was world design etc. work going on at background for CP77 during TW3 development, made starting actual development easier for CP77


CDP + GOG is 800-ish people, 600-ish people working on development, 100-ish on Gwent and 500-ish on CP77?

Jason says 400-ish for CP77, Marcin doesn't correct him.

This gen or next?


PC + current-gen. Says they have no idea when or what next-gen is, says their tech is ready to scale up to next-gen.
REDEngine 4 runs CP77, REDEngine 3 ran TW3. They rewrote / improved most of engine for CP77.

People have to be paid for overtime (read: crunch) in Poland, unlike in e.g. US

Yes, but demo is actually all out development build that they used internally for development. Not vertical slice just for E3.
Proud of their achievement, able to get build into this presentable state was big achievement from the team. From graphics to gameplay to stability of the build
They had to plan somewhat around E3, fit it into schedule so it gets done by X date.
Treated this as milestone. Didn't have separate team doing "vertical slice", but everyone working towards same goal and moving game forwards


When is next CP77 appearance?


Gamescom 2018.
What they show wont be what was shown in E3, something different / new.
Don't expect 100% new demo, but something different. New angle on things.
Doesn't say if this will be behind closed doors or public showing, but Jason also didn't ask


Post-release roadmap planned for CP77?


Not planned yet, first they want get core games release planned and done

Gunn was removed as director of the third film in the successful Disney/Marvel series when a number of years-old tweets (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/jul/26/was-james-gunn-the-first-undeserving-victim-of-hollywoods-new-zero-tolerance-policy) were dug up and spotlighted by alt-right conspiracists, spearheaded by the blogger Mike Cernovich – previously best-known for the ridiculous “Pizzagate” conspiracy (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/dec/05/pizzagate-lie-what-it-says-about-society-real)and with a track record for mendacious claims about left-leaning figures involvement in paedophilia.

Gunn was targeted by Cernovich because of his public anti-Trump stance (https://www.indiewire.com/2017/12/james-gunn-donald-trump-dick-joke-twitter-james-mangold-1201908489/). He represented an easy scalp for the right, a prominent liberal figure who could be taken down in the same manner as Barr, as an eye for an eye, and to show that the right could weaponise the same kind of outrage they themselves face from so-called “snowflakes”.

There are no values or morals behind this brand of harpooning. How could Cernovich be offended by jokes about sexual assault when he has previously declared that “date rape does not exist”, and continues to show fervent support for Trump? All he actually seems to care about is ridding the world of prominent liberal figures in entertainment and politics.

But Cernovich and his ilk – who, in the aftermath of Gunns firing, set about similar attacks on comedians Michael Ian Black (http://observer.com/2018/07/michael-ian-black-mike-cernovich-twitter-attack/) and Patton Oswalt, albeit with much less tangible success – will continue to get away with this strand of manufactured outrage for as long as it plays to the prejudices of their target audience. And Gunn will no doubt work again, whether on a Marvel film or elsewhere entirely. Its Disney, though, who find themselves in the most difficult position.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer: “I would say that the game is pretty different to what we showed last year”


Tomaszkiewicz claimed CD Projekt RED is working on a lot of stuff that it didnt show yet, and there is now a more clear picture of what the game is all about. As such, some of the E3 2018 missions may not be similar to what was shown, and there could be some graphical or visual differences as the E3 2018 demo was just a small fraction of the actual game.

“We are constantly polishing and thinking how to make the game more interesting, how to make the gameplay more cool and, well, the demo shown last year was only a small fragment of the actual game. There wasnt a clear picture of how the game fits into an open world or how it fits into a larger image of the game. So, there are many stuff that we didnt show yet, there are many things that we are still working on. I would say that the game is pretty different to what we shown last year but there are many details that we are currently working on.”

Speaking about Cyberpunk 2077s gameplay, Tomaszkiewicz said:



“I would say that Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world game with a strong narrative component set in a dark future. It is an RPG with decisions and consequences where everything you do matters. Well, I do not know how much more I can put in the box, it depends on the source we use. I would say that there are many ways to play in terms of gameplay and it offers a wide variety of options depending on how you want to play the title and allows you to enjoy the way you want to play. I think thats how I would describe the title.”
“I would like to make a reference to one of the previous questions and that is that our game is mainly an RPG, then the combat in the first person is something added to this genre. In this way, the gameplay in Cyberpunk offers a variety of ways to complete the missions and I think this is the biggest difference because it not only matters the shooter side, but also how to incorporate this aspect in your way of playing through the title. And we have a good amount of mechanics that are based on this concept which we have not yet shown, so stay tuned.
In addition to this we are working on bringing good and fun combat mechanics and I think we have a wide range of weapons that will make our game stand out. I do not know if you remember in the previous demo that there were smart rifles and this is something that I have not seen much in the current FPS. Also, I think that in terms of gameplay we have some ideas and things that are not ready yet and that we are trying to implement, because they will be very good.”

Regarding the games shooting mechanics, Tomaszkiewicz claimed that they will be somewhere between arcade and sim.



“I think it would be something in between, because it is an RPG and we have statistics, damage and so on. And as you know, enemies also have stats, then it is not super realistic like a World War II title where a shot means to be dead, but I would say that it does not reach the level of arcade like the examples you have described (In this case they were Borderlands and Bulletstorm). Here you still need to cover yourself, then you can not just jump and avoid enemies. Although there are ways to play the title in this way using for example the melee weapon we saw last year, the katana. And if you move in this direction you will achieve a more arcade style for your character. In short, I would say it would be something in between.”

Releasing gameplay right away would make the gamescom presentations pointless and would significantly limit our chance to build hype. Why do we need to build hype? To get more gamers interested in CP2077 and, hopefully, convince them to give it a go. We are putting our hearts and souls into making CP2077 a great game and we would like as many gamers as possible to find out about it and experience its amazing story. Also, hype can turn into sales (after all, we are not a charity), and good sales allow us to grow, take creative risks and deliver new, great games for you to enjoy.

And lets not forget about one more super important announcement — the release date. Less than a year from now, on April 16th, 2020, youll finally be able to sink your teeth into Cyberpunk 2077.

As you probably noticed, we prepared 2 editions of the game. Why only two? Because when we pre-order ourselves, we dont like to go to Wikipedia to compare content. We have a simple deal: theres the standard edition, the one we think most gamers will choose, and a limited Collectors Edition. While we're pretty proud of the CE, we'd like to turn your attention to that first one. Why? Because we have really maxed out the physical capacity of the box with goodies. We think this raises the bar for "standard" and we hope you'll think so, too. Also, since pre-orders are live, you might be wondering if theres any point in placing an order now. Its not any stretch of the imagination to say that Silverhand is integral to the plot of Cyberpunk – in fact, as far as we can tell, he is the plot.

In Cyberpunk 2077 you play as a mercenary named V in Night City, a fictional metropolis in Northern California. What makes V special and Silverhand so important is that the two become linked early in the game through a biochip, a piece of hardware that can interface with your brain. The chip is planted inside V's head against his (or her, if you play a female character) will. Inside this chip is Silverhands consciousness – and, quite possibly, the key to immortality.
