Pelican Wii Console Stand Review
Exclusive premier of the officially licensed Wii console stand.

There are a fair number of console stands / organizers available for the Wii, including house-branded GameStop's glowing stand (http://gear.ign.com/articles/766/766454p1.html) and Switch N' Carry's Home Organizer Kit (http://gear.ign.com/articles/746/746895p1.html). Each design we've seen so far, however, keeps the Wii in its attractive, if not space efficient, vertical orientation.

There are, no doubt, situations in which a horizontal Wii is desirable, such as when the console is situated in an entertainment cabinet with more traditionally styled A/V gear. Hardcore fans may feel that cute little Wii looks somewhat inconsequential on its side, and as such is in need of an official looking horizontal stand. Happily, that's exactly what Pelican (http://pelicanperformance.com/) is offering via its officially licensed Console Stand for the Wii.

The stand is molded from very Wii-like white plastic and bears a Nintendo-approved Wii logo up front. To the right of where the console resides is a storage compartment capable of securing a Wiimote and Nunchuck in foam cutouts. A segregated exhaust port allows the Wii's lower fan to have unrestricted access to fresh air. An inset on the front of the stand is designed to hold the Wii Sensor bar and a wire groove leading to the stern of the stand makes for a clean installation.

Packaged together in the Pelican stand, a Wii, sensor bar, Wiimote, and Nunchuck make a compact package. While some users most interested in giving the Wii some horizontal prominence in an entertainment cabinet may not find the integrated Sensor Bar groove useful, others with space to place the entire setup directly above or below their display will likely appreciate the setup's all-in-one layout. We'd call it the perfect Wii travel-solution were it not for the fact that the Wii is not actively secured in the stand, meaning it will fall off if you tried to carry the whole arrangement like a book. A bit of webbing or bungee cord would likely address this problem for Wii road warriors.

The Wii Console Stand will see wide retail release late this month / early June. Its MSRP will be $19.99.
